1.2. Martin ARCHDALE (John1), born bef 1558, Stafford, Staffordshire, England; died testate 25 Dec 1597, St. Margaret Pattens, London, England; buried 3 Jan 1697/8, St. Margaret Pattens; married June 13, 1575, St. Olave Hart Street, London, England, Barbara SEXTON, b abt 1557, d December 1617 Hornchurch, Essex, England, d/o Thomas SEXTON, and later wife of Sir William AYLOFFE.

Inexplicably, Martin was not included by his nephew, Richard, in the 1633-4 Harleian Visitations, although other records do document him as John's son, including his will, in which he names, among others, "my brother Thomas ARCHDALE, draper, citizen of London." According to the Archdale Memoirs, the crest on Martin's coat of arms (included in his funeral certifcate) denotes his status as "second son." (not researched).

According to Martin's funeral certificate, which describes him as a "Citizen of London, gent.," he died 25 Dec 1597 at his house "neer Tower Street" in London, and was buried 2 Jan 1597 at St. Margaret Pattens. In his will, he is self described as a "citizen and grocer of London." The certificate also includes the name of his wife, and the names and ages of all his surviving children (all also named in his will).

Following Martin's death, Barbara SEXTON married 2nd Sir William AYLOFFE, as confirmed by the 1634 Visitation of Essex, which states that "Sr. Will'm AYLOFFE of Britteins in Essex & Broxted in the same county [Essex], Knighted 11th of May 1603 & knt. & Baronett." married "Barbara d. of ....SEXTON of ...2 wife." (See also below) Barbara had two sons by Sir William (Thomas and John) and was buried at Hornchurch, Essex 16 Dec 1617.
