1.1. Richard ARCHDALE (John1), b bef 1528, Stafford, Staffordshire, England; d 1577, Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire; m bef May 1561, Mary FERNE, d aft 1609; d/o (Rafe?) and Dorothy UNKNOWN Ferne of Cuddesdon.

Richard was admitted to the Middle Temple on 16 Oct 1551 "at the instance of Mr. John POLLAR," the first ARCHDALE to appear in their records. He had married Mary FERNE before 14 May 1561 when, as Mary ARCHDALE, she was granted administration of the estate of her mother, "Mrs. Dorothy FERNE of Cuddesdon, deceased." In 1570, Mary was granted the administration of the estate of her brother, Ralph FERNE, Jr., and her father was probably the Rafe (old style for Ralph) FERNE who was listed as father of Antony FERNE, christened in Cuddesdon on 14 May 1551 (in his 1631 will, Richard and Mary's son, Abraham ARCHDALE of Wheatley, Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire, made a bequest to his "uncle Anthony FERNE of London").

Richard is listed as John ARCHDALE'S eldest son in the Visitations of London, 1633-4, Archedale Family. This source also states Mary's maiden name was FERNE, and likewise gives FERNE as the maiden name of Anne, wife of Richard's brother, Barnard. The two women are documented as sisters by their children's references to each other as "cousins german" (first cousins). Richard died ca 1577, his probate records indexed as "Rd. ARCHEDALLE, gent., of Wheatley, Cuddesdon."

Richard and Mary had issue:

1.1.1. Abraham ARCHDALE, b abt 1565, d testate and s.p. in 1631 in Whatlie (Wheatley), Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire, England.

Abraham ARCHDALE, gent. of Oxon, matriculated 12 Feb 1589/90 from Gloucester Hall, Oxford University, aged 25 (born ca 1565).

The 1609 St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, London, England will of Abraham's uncle Thomas ARCHDALE included a bequest to "To my cousin, Abraham ARCHEDALE the yearly payment of twenty pounds during the life of the natural mother of said Abraham..." It is not known why Thomas would use the term "natural mother" since Abraham's father was already deceased, thus no step-mother possible (assuming there was no divorce or annulment?).

Abraham ARCHDALE of Whatlie, Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire wrote his will in Aug-Sep 1631, naming numerous relatives, including most of his siblings.

1.1.2. John ARCHDALE, b abt 1572 Cuddesden, Oxfordshire, England, d s.p. 1632-1634, in (possibly) Whatlie, Oxford, England

The 1597 St. Margaret Pattens, London, England will of their uncle, Martin ARCHDALE, included bequests to "My nephew, John ARCHDALE, son of Mary ARCHDALE, widow and his brother Abraham ARCHDALE."

John is named in the 1599 St. Michael Paternoster Royal, London, will of his uncle, Matthew ARCHDALE, which includes a bequest to "my cousin John ARCHDALE of Whetlie." [Oxford] thirty pounds. He is also named in the 1631 Wheatley, Cuddeston, Oxfordshire will of his brother, Abraham, thus apparently died between 1631 and the 1633-1634 Harleian Visitations, which state of Richard and Mary's four sons: "all dead without issue."

1.1.3 Cyprian ARCHDALE, b bef 1577, died s.p., probably bef 1631

1.1.4. Virgil ARCHDALE, b bef 1577, died s.p., probably bef 1631

1.1.5. Mary ARCHDALE, christened 29 Sep 1564, Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire, England; m bef 1615, Robert MOULTON, b bef 1595, of Huneyborne, Worcestershire, England

The Harleian Visitations state that Mary married "Robert MOULTON of Hunyborne in Co. Worcester, Gent." and list their daughter as "wife to Richard POWELL of Forest Hill, Com. Oxon." (Oxfordshire).

Their children included (1) Ann MOULTON, b bef 1616, d aft 1631; m bef 1631, Richard POWELL, d aft 1631 (of) Forest Hill, Oxfordshire, England; (2) Mary POWELL, b bef 1630; m 21 May 1643, (Forest Hill?), Oxfordshire, England, John MILTON, b 1608 London, England, d aft 1650; and (3) 5 Richard POWELL, b aft 1631 (Memoirs

1.1.6. Margaret ARCHDALE, christened 24 Nov 1565, Cuddesden, Oxfordshire, England, d aft 1631; m bef 1617, Unknown BENNETT, d bef 1631 4 Unknown BENNETT, m bef 1631, Thomas RICHARDSON

Margaret is listed in the Harleian Visitations, but no husband is included. Margaret is named in the 1599 St. Michael Paternoster Royal, London, England will of her uncle, Matthew ARCHDALE

The 1631 will of her brother, Abraham, includes a bequest to his sister "Margarett BENNETT of Oxford widdowe," and a cancelled item: "...RICHARDSON wife of Thomas RICHARDSON of Oxford and daughter of my sister Margaret forty pounds."

1.1.7. Dorothy ARCHDALE, christened 29 Apr 1568, Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire; England; m February 07, 1592/93, Cuddesden, Oxfordshire, England; John STAMPE of Holton Parish, Oxforshire.

Dorothy is listed in the Harleian Visitations of London, 1634, Archdale Family, as the wife of John STAMP of Haulton (or Halton), Co. Oxon. She and members of her family are also named in the 1629 Orion College, Oxford University will of her cousin, William COMBE (s/o John and Margaret ARCHDALE Combe) and the 1631 Wheatley, Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire will of her brother, Abraham ARCHDALE.

Like her Uncle Barnard ARCHDALE, Dorothy and her husband, John, were "nonconformists" (probably Catholic?, but possibly Puritan, Brown Separatists, etc.). According to the source, H.E. Salter, 'Recusants in Oxfordshire,' REPT. OXF.ARCHAEOL.SOC., 1924, "As a recusant yeoman at Newnham Murren his [John STAMPE'S] goods had been valued at 300 pounds. She [Dorothy] was fined 20 pounds for not attending church." HIST. MSS. COMM. HATFIELD HOUSE, iv, 1892 p.270, p.43, adds that "In 1592 John STAMPE, gent., of Holton, was a recusant at liberty."

1.1.8. Frances ARCHDALE, b abt 1569, d aft 1631; m bef 1615, Richard LOWE of London, d aft 1631; by whom Richard, Mary (m bef 1631, PUDSEY); Elizabeth, Ann and Frances.

Frances is listed in the Harleian Visitations of London, 1633/4, Archdale Family, as the wife of "Richard LOWE of London, Mercer." She is named in the 1599 St. Michael Paternoster Royal, London, England will of her uncle, Matthew ARCHDALE. She is also named as a sister in the 1631 will of her brother, Abraham, who terms her "Fraunces LOWE." 1.1.9. Bridget ARCHDALE, b bef 1577; m (1) bef 1630, Unknown BLACKBOURNE; m (2) (Richard?) HARRIS

Bridget is named in the 1599 St. Michael Paternoster Royal, London, England will of her uncle, Matthew ARCHDALE, is named in the 1609 St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, London will of her uncle Thomas ARCHDALE, which includes a bequest "To my cousin Bridget ARCHEDALE, thirty pounds within six months next after my decease..."

In 1631, she is named in the will of her brother, Abraham of Wheatley, Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire, "to the two sonnes of my sister Bridgett BLACKBOURNE vizt. William and Richard they releasinge as aforesayd One Hundred pounds apeece, otherwise this their Legatie to be voyde." In the 1633-4 Visitation of London, Archdale Family, however, Bridget is listed as "wife to .... HARRIS." It would appear that Bridget remarried during the interim, but no record has been found of either of her marriages. Nor have her sons been traced. The 1629 Orion College, Oxford University will of Bridget's cousin, William COMBE (see Dorothy ARCHDALE Stamp), includes a bequest to a Richard HARRIS, but no relationship is stated, and not known if relevant.

1.1.10 Barbara ARCHDALE, b 1575/6, Cuddesden, Oxfordshire, England, d aft 1631; m bef 1619, Oxfordshire, England, Joseph BARNES, d abt 1619.

Barbara is named in the 1599 St. Michael Paternoster Royal, London, England will of her uncle, Matthew ARCHDALE, and in 1631, appears in the Wheatley, Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire will of her brother, Abraham ARCHDALE as "Barbara BARNES widdowe," and also a bequest unto "Anne BARNES daughter of my sister Barbara BARNES." According to "Joseph BARNES was an (the?) Oxford University Printer; his will dated (proved?) 1619, his brother-in-law, Arbraham ARCHDALE the overseer (S. Gibson, "ABSTRACTS FROM THE WILLS AND TESTAMENTARY DOCUMENTS OF BINDERS, PRINTERS AND STATIONERS OF OXFORD FROM 1493-1638," 1907, p.27).

Barbara is listed in the Harleian Visitations, London, 1633-4, Archdale Family, as "wife to Joseph BARNES."
