COMBS-COOMBS &c.
INTERNATIONAL DNA STUDY
Our Virtual Archive I

Lineage “Snapshots”, Study Goals & Learnings

Our repository of over 160 Combs-Coombs &c. lineage “snapshots” can help you further your family history.

  1. VIRTUAL ARCHIVE I allows you to search thru the ENTIRE set of lineages available and can take awhile to load. Go to LINEAGE LOCATOR
  2. VIRTUAL ARCHIVE II allows you to select and view a smaller number of lineages and will take less time to load.

PURPOSE. Each “snapshot” is provided by researchers as their best picture of what they believe to be their COMBS-COOMBS ancestry given their existing knowledge base. Keep in mind that different people will arrive at different conclusions based on a range of expertise and success in finding and using documentation. Considering this information with your own research can give clues or specific information that can help you trace your family tree. See HOW TO USE the Virtual Archive for specific ways to search this Archive to derive specific family history applications.

ORGANIZATION. Lineage “snapshots” are in alpha order by LOCATION (country, shire/state, counties/parishes, etc.), next, given name with variant spellings of surnames treated as one, but spelled as recorded. ALL OPTIONAL SPELLINGS and RELATED SURNAMES including Scot variants are filed together in the same archive. Research goals, learnings, and a contact who submitted the information are noted. See ABOUT the Virtual Archive for more details.

ACCESS. Utilize the right scroll bar, the browser find feature on your computer, drop down menus and references on the “snapshot” including “See” references or links to the Family History Project , Lineage Studies , DNA Findings or Oral History Oral - History. Each location name on the top of the “snapshot” will link you to a report in the research project when one is available. The “Link Bar” found after each “snapshot” will bring you back to the Navigation Bar.

MIGRATIONMigration References provide a link for researchers at the beginning of a group of lineage “snapshots” to more readily recognize potential connections categorized with other locations in the Archive. These links are between specific known locations and locations too broad to categorize. For example, in 1850 I may have an ancestor I traced the furthest back in time in Australia, and know they came from Scotland based on records BUT I don't know where in Scotland, so a migration reference is noted so researchers can see where in the Virtual Archive to find potential connections.

LINKING YOUR LINEAGE TO THE COMBS &c. RESEARCH PROJECT Researchers who identify web pages that are relevant to the specific lineage they have included in the Virtual Archive can submit the report title and URL to Steven Gilley for inclusion on the lineage snapshot.

From Andrew to Nathan well documented - Jesse as a son of Rev War John is documented through relationship to DAR descendants via Presley Coombs and Edna Gove by family notes and letters of the 19th Century, contemporary with Jesse, Presley and Edna.

Goals

  • Determine the “genetic profile” for this line of MACOMBER.
  • Establish the “lineage genetic profile” for this branch of MACOMBER.
  • Determine the origins of GEN 4 John MACOMBER parentage and ancestral origins.
  • Note: Fairly well. From #6 back is derived from the Stackpole Genealogical research which has some caveats regarding sources but I did visit Bridport and confirmed John (1585-1650) and his marriage. From William C. (#4) on, I did the research personally in Kent County archives and found and saw the actual vital record documents. Interested in learning how and when (or even if) Macombers got from Scotland to England. Or perhaps, if there's an earlier West England or Norman connection, it was the other way around.

Goals

  • Determine the “genetic profile” for this branch of COMBS.
  • Establish the “lineage genetic profile” of the ancestry for this line.
  • Note: The lineage to Joseph Coombe who died in Auckland is well researched and the link to his mother proven. A lot of information is available regarding his life. This is available from NZ papers and the Australian BDM information. Information regarding the UK side has been sourced from the LDS site and is not so researched and there is a great deal of confusion as there is a multiple of names. There is a mention by the researcher MR of Joseph Coombe who went to NZ but no direct lineage. In the London end of the lineage there is a lot of duplication of names and places of christening. Apparently some of the churches amalgamated and single persons can have multiple locations of christening. There is also an apparent shortage of first names and this creates chronological confusion trying to identify particular people eg Mary Ann Coombe after the birth of her son Joseph and the death of her husband Joseph married a Joseph whose parents were Mary Ann and Joseph and they had a daughter called Mary Ann and the remarried Mary Ann formerly Coombe went on to have a daughter Mary Ann. Thus there are multiple marriages of Mary Anns to Josephs and multiple marriages for a Mary Ann to a Joseph Coombe.

Goals

  • Identify the genetic profile for descendants of Ellis COMBE kinsman of John COMBE OR another English COMBEs line with a similar genetic profile to connect this lineage further back in time.
  • Determine the connection or identify records involving Archdale COMBE to CAMMACK (CAMMOCK), COGHILL, MACRAH (MAGRAH), ARNOLD, FOXHALL in either Ireland or England based on Colonial Virginia associations.
  • Validate the assumption that Archdale's brothers Robert and John had no issue by dying in childhood thereby making Archdale the only surviving son of John COMBE and Elizabeth LOVETT.
  • Determine any similar genetic profiles of other Colonial American COMBS-COOMBS.
  • Note:Generations 1 through 13 well documented. If #7 William KENDALL is not the son of #8, it is likely he is a cousin and still a descendant of #9 based on available Stafford Co VA records.

Goals

  • Establish the “genetic profile” for this branch of COMBS.
  • Determine the “lineage genetic profile” to which this branch belongs.
  • Specifically, validate this branch is part of the descendants of Archdale COMBS
  • Note: Well documented. Gen 4 Hezekiah C. Combs married Martha Ellen Hudson, daughter of Henry Davis Hudson and Elizabeth Campbell and the granddaughter of John C. Jack Campbell and Martha aka Patsy Smith. Hezekiah's uncle William Benton Combs was married to Martha's aunt Susannah Campbell (d/o of John C. Jack Campbell and Martha aka Patsy Smith).Gen 5 cousins married: Henry G. was a grandson of “Henry 8” through his father Stephen. It is believed that Evoline was the daughter of one Jeremiah Combs (lineage undetermined) and his wife Elizabeth Combs, d/o Henry “8”. So Henry G’s father Stpehen and Evoline’s mother were brother and sister, making Henry and Evoline FIRST cousins.

Goals

  • Determine the “genetic profile” for this branch of COOMBS.
  • Identify related COOMBES branches to establish the “lineage genetic profile” of this branch of COOMBES and trace it further back.
  • Specifically link Gen 7 John COOMBES to his ancestry. Examine a probable connection to the COMBES of Otterford and the Crewkerne Farm where John lived.
  • Note: Well documented thru Gen 6. Gen 7 needs verification. Sons of Gen 7 John COOMBES and Edith (documented by baptism records at Crewkerne and Chillington, a nearby village) are: Thomas 1779, Henry 1781, John 1775, Robert 1775, William 1777. There is very probably a conection to the Combes of Otterford to this farm.
