COMBS-COOMBS &c.
INTERNATIONAL DNA STUDY
Our Virtual Archive I
Lineage “Snapshots”, Study Goals & Learnings
Our repository of over 170 Combs-Coombs &c. lineage “snapshots” can help you further your family history.
VIRTUAL ARCHIVE I allows you to search thru the ENTIRE set of lineages available and can take awhile to load. Go to LINEAGE LOCATOR
VIRTUAL ARCHIVE II allows you to select and view a smaller number of lineages and will take less time to load.
PURPOSE. Each “snapshot” is provided by researchers as their best picture of what they believe to be their COMBS-COOMBS ancestry given their existing knowledge base. Keep in mind that different people will arrive at different conclusions based on a range of expertise and success in finding and using documentation. Considering this information with your own research can give clues or specific information that can help you trace your family tree. See HOW TO USE the Virtual Archive for specific ways to search this Archive to derive specific family history applications.
ORGANIZATION. Lineage “snapshots” are in alpha order by LOCATION (country, shire/state, counties/parishes, etc.), next, given name with variant spellings of surnames treated as one, but spelled as recorded. ALL OPTIONAL SPELLINGS and RELATED SURNAMES including Scot variants are filed together in the same archive. Research goals, learnings, and a contact who submitted the information are noted. See ABOUT the Virtual Archive for more details.
ACCESS. Utilize the right scroll bar, the browser find feature on your computer, drop down menus and references on the “snapshot” including “See” references or links to the Family History Project , Lineage Studies , DNA Findings or Oral History . Each location name on the top of the “snapshot” will link you to a report in the research project when one is available. The “Link Bar” found after each “snapshot” will bring you back to the Navigation Bar.
MIGRATION — Migration References provide a link for researchers at the beginning of a group of lineage “snapshots” to more readily recognize potential connections categorized with other locations in the Archive. These links are between specific known locations and locations too broad to categorize. For example, in 1850 I may have an ancestor I traced the furthest back in time in Australia, and know they came from Scotland based on records BUT I don't know where in Scotland, so a migration reference is noted so researchers can see where in the Virtual Archive to find potential connections.
LINKING YOUR LINEAGE TO THE COMBS &c. RESEARCH PROJECT Researchers who identify web pages that are relevant to the specific lineage they have included in the Virtual Archive can submit the report title and URL to Steven Gilley for inclusion on the lineage snapshot.
UPDATING YOUR LINEAGE — Send any changes to Steven Gilley
CONTACTING LINEAGE SUBMITTER — Highlight and select the Lineage Contact name. Indicate on the email form the name of the person you would like to respond. Also you are invited to join our Discussion Group.

Relationship between Joseph of Bucks County, Joseph of Coombs Fort and Andrew.
Those questions regarding Samuel/Joseph [known parent child] and Joseph of Coombs Fort - and Joseph of Coombs Fort and Andrew. All indications are that they are related - but there is no solid proof - merely probabilities and possibilities.
Note: From Samuel to Joseph well documentedc - from Joseph to Andrew, many questions. From Andrew to Nathan well documented - Jesse as a son of Rev War John is documented through relationship to DAR descendants via Presley Coombs and Edna Gove by family notes and letters of the 19th Century, contemporary with Jesse, Presley and Edna.

Note: Fairly well. From #6 back is derived from the Stackpole Genealogical research which has some caveats regarding sources but I did visit Bridport and confirmed John (1585-1650) and his marriage. From William C. (#4) on, I did the research personally in Kent County archives and found and saw the actual vital record documents. Interested in learning how and when (or even if) Macombers got from Scotland to England. Or perhaps, if there's an earlier West England or Norman connection, it was the other way around.

Goals
Determine the “genetic profile” for this branch of COMBS.
Establish the “lineage genetic profile” of the ancestry for this line.
Note: The lineage to Joseph Coombe who died in Auckland is well researched and the link to his mother proven. A lot of information is available regarding his life. This is available from NZ papers and the Australian BDM information. Information regarding the UK side has been sourced from the LDS site and is not so researched and there is a great deal of confusion as there is a multiple of names. There is a mention by the researcher MR of Joseph Coombe who went to NZ but no direct lineage. In the London end of the lineage there is a lot of duplication of names and places of christening. Apparently some of the churches amalgamated and single persons can have multiple locations of christening. There is also an apparent shortage of first names and this creates chronological confusion trying to identify particular people eg Mary Ann Coombe after the birth of her son Joseph and the death of her husband Joseph married a Joseph whose parents were Mary Ann and Joseph and they had a daughter called Mary Ann and the remarried Mary Ann formerly Coombe went on to have a daughter Mary Ann. Thus there are multiple marriages of Mary Anns to Josephs and multiple marriages for a Mary Ann to a Joseph Coombe.
Identify the genetic profile for descendants of Ellis COMBE kinsman of John COMBE OR another English COMBEs line with a similar genetic profile to connect this lineage further back in time.
Determine the connection or identify records involving Archdale COMBE to CAMMACK (CAMMOCK), COGHILL, MACRAH (MAGRAH), ARNOLD, FOXHALL in either Ireland or England based on Colonial Virginia associations.
Validate the assumption that Archdale's brothers Robert and John had no issue by dying in childhood thereby making Archdale the only surviving son of John COMBE and Elizabeth LOVETT.
Determine any similar genetic profiles of other Colonial American COMBS-COOMBS.
Note:Generations 1 through 13 well documented. If #7 William KENDALL is not the son of #8, it is likely he is a cousin and still a descendant of #9 based on available Stafford Co VA records.

Jack Campbell and Martha aka Patsy Smith. Hezekiah's uncle William Benton Combs was married to Martha's aunt Susannah Campbell (d/o of John C. Jack Campbell and Martha aka Patsy Smith).Gen 5 cousins married: Henry G. was a grandson of “Henry 8” through his father Stephen. It is believed that Evoline was the daughter of one Jeremiah Combs (lineage undetermined) and his wife Elizabeth Combs, d/o Henry “8”. So Henry G’s father Stpehen and Evoline’s mother were brother and sister, making Henry and Evoline FIRST cousins.

In view of the proximity of Worcester to Warwickshire (and Stratford on Avon), it would be interesting to know if there is a connection between my line and the various Combses mentioned in connection with William Shakespeare in your Combs &c website.
Is there a connection between this COMBS line and the Combses of the USA?
Notes: “Resources could still be searched”. Details for #1 to #7 are quite well documented, being based on personally known details backed up by BDM records obtained from Australian BDM registrations. Details for #8 are based on BDM records obtained from Australian registries and details from the LDS website. Few sources have been studied for #9 to #12. The above details are based on information from the LDS Family Search website.
The reliability of details for #1 to #8 is very good, despite my inability to locate documentation for the birth of #7 George Henry COMBS (1843-1928). However, the year of his birth can be deduced from his parents (#8 John {Parsons} COMBS and Ann Maria HARTLEY) death certificates and his own death certificate. George Henry COMBS's (1843-1928) marriage certificate is inconclusive because there are anomalies for both his and Rebecca (nee SUTTON) BROOKS's ages. The settlement of South Australia started in 1836 and initially births (baptisms), deaths (burials) and marriages were recorded by the churches. Civil registrations started in July 1842. There is no birth registration for George Henry COMBS (1843-1928) in the civil registry, nor in the church records that I have located on line. However, the birth of his older sister Ruth COMBS (1841-1905) does appear in the on line church records.

Establish the “lineage genetic profile” to tie this COOMBS branch to the ancestral line. Done
Specifically, identify the parents of Gen #6 John COMBS which will be from the mid 1700s.
Note: Documented thoroughly to #5 Phillip Combs. Still researching #6 John Combs. US census data studied & unhelpful. A Cobb Co. GA John COMBS who died in 1850 at age 106 and Gen #5 Philip COMBS are the only COMBS in Cobb Co, GA at the time. Rev. War Pension Application of Gen 7, signed by a Philip COMBS suggests a relationship. Surnames of wives being studied. 1850 Obit and pension application payment coincide and appear to be for the same John COMBS.

Goals
Establish the genetic profile for this branch of COMBS
Determine John L. COMBS parentage based on comparison of genetic profiles.
See if there are any male descendants of John L. COMBS presumed brother Benjamin COMBS other unknown branches who may be able to provide a genetic profile for pursuing this lineage further.
Note: Well documented. No hint of John L. Combs' parentage or what the "L" stands for. He appears out of thin air in Barren Co, KY in 1817 on the tax list. Since the Reads lived in Stafford, were members of the Chopawansic Baptist Church, and lived near the John and Sarah Luttrell Combs family, I have wondered if John L. Combs was not a son of their son Nimrod Combs, who apparently had some children but are not documented, or the son of their bastard son John. John's status as a fugitive could be pursued further in KY Court records.

Goals
By establishing and comparing "genetic profiles" determine if Jeremiah "Long Jerry" COMBS shares a common ancestry with Mason COMBS Sr. of Stafford Co, Va
Determine if Jeremiah also shares a common ancestry with Mason COMBS (1795-1853/4), and Shadrach COMBS Sr, or with the 8 brothers, or with another unplaced Perry Co. Jeremiah COMBS.
Note: Lineage through #7 Jeremiah "Long Jerry" thoroughly documented by records. Almost all records available on Combs website and part of various family reports. John, the reputed father of Jeremiah "Long Jerry" COMBS, as presented by Dr. Josiah COMBS, is not supported by any records. All available documents have been researched, and none of these yield any definiable clues to the father of Jeremiah "Long Jerry" Sr. Some oldtimer interviewees believed he was a 9th brother. His children carry many of the names found in the children of John COMBS Sr. and Nancy Harding. If he is a "9th" brother, then maybe the list of the 8 brothers is incorrect. Or, if his father was a different John, then we have a third old John COMBS not yet understood.

I would really like to prove that this William Combs Sr. is a part of my Combs' branch, as there are other William Combses within Green Co. KY and the surrounding area (Nelson or Hardin Co.) that could also be a part of my branch. Which one of them is where I need more info. I'm wondering if this William descends from the Combs in VA, MD, or NC/TN and back to England, perhaps? Or, maybe my branch leads in a completely different direction-I would love to know!
Note: Most of this branch has been documented thoroughly from generation 1-6. More resources could still be searched for generation 7 and beyond. Generation 1-5 is documented with sources such as bible pedigree charts, census indexes, birth, marriage and death records, and of course, personal knowledge.

There is no documented proof that Anthony was French and there are other unexplored explanations as to why a "French" oral tradition could have grown up around him: lived along the frontier with New France and/or he was apprenticed to a french speaking Acadian blacksmith.

Establish the “lineage genetic profile” of the ancestry for this line.
Establish the relationship between Peter Coombs (1781-1810) and Anthony Coombs (b. 1642), who according to William Carey Coombs fathered the New Meadows, Maine branch of the Coombs family.
Note: Generations 3-7 are all found in The Descendants of Anthony Coombs, by William Carey Coombs published in 1913. The work contains some errors. For instance, Generation #4's middle name was Wesley, not Dexter, as proof of which I would cite his high school diploma and several documents/farm product packages containing his true name or initials in my possession. Also, the date of death for Generation #5 was 1888, not 1868, for which I cite the gravestone of John Dexter Coombs in Woodlawn Cemetery, West Bowdoin, ME and the temporary gravemarker for such in my possession. Like many others, I am skeptical of much of the information in the William Carey Coombs work, not only because of the many errors that I and the previous owner of my copy found in it, but because the story of Anthony being a Frenchman posing as a Scotsman doesn't sound very believable.

Goals
Determine the “genetic profile” for this branch of COMBS.
Establish the “lineage genetic profile” of the ancestry for this line.
Note: Information from work my grandmother (Gladys Wheeler Davis) did so I have no confirmation on Gen 7, 6, or 5. I have found these folks on the Coombs-Combs website and the information seems to confirm some of this. There is one mention that John’s father was Jonathan, but nothing besides that. I believe there are enough records for this to be believable through Gen 6, but I’m unsure after that.
Determine the identity of Gen. 5 and the genetic profile for comparison with other “lineage genetic profiles”.
Determine the parentage of Gen. 4 and the country this branch of COMBS came from to America.
Validate the efficacy of the family legend of James T. COOMES father being a Captain of a British ship and lost at sea and related details like the ship name, etc
Note: Fairly Well documented. The naming pattern in this lineage appears to resemble some COOMES of Nelson Co, KY. This lineage may have as many as 3 non-paternal events. Celia Elizabeth Fields is the sister of Polly Fields. Gary is the grandson of Polly and I am the granddaughter of Celia Elizabeth Fields. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants approved an application that gave John's parents as John Coombs (born 10/3/1697) and Susanna Strong (born 2/22/1687/8). This line leads back to Degory Priest, a Mayflower passenger. All resources documented thoroughly except for “original” ancester - John - from family records he was a 9 yr old boy who “worked his way across the water on a boat” to the New Hampshire from Scotland. Some it came from material found in a black leather notebook belonging to my great grandfather, Leslie I. Combs. I wish I knew who has this book now! Also documented by Katherine Elaine Combs Bryce, June 1945, for her membership to the Colonial Dames and DAR in 1930.
Note: Who did John Combs, at 9 years old, come with to the US? Would a 9 year old come by himself? Where in Scotland did he come from? Why to New Hampshire? I feel confident about the research done on my family line. It helped that John spent most of his life in Richford, Franklin Co, VT - as did his son, Caleb, his grandson, Elias, until my grandfather, Leslie Ira, left for IN.

Note: Well documented. Looking for the John/Jonathan Combs married ca 1790 and moved from NJ or Penn. ca 1804. There is a marriage between a Catharine Heron and Jonathan Combs in Philadelphia 1787 that should be ruled in or out as related. I think Catharine may have been the daughter of James Heron a British soldier. Family history says these Combs were Pennsylvania Dutch. One census has part of the family listing ethnic origin as German and the other English. Jonathon Combs children follow a pattern of names coming from the Richard Combs line out of Long Island. His children were John, William, Lewis, Moses, James and Pheobe. Associated names include: Moore, Pettit, Bedell, Cowell.

Further the lineage of John COOMBS’ father Joseph COOMBS.
Establish the “genetic profile” of this lineage for comparison. Done Use this to determine if Joseph was the immigrant ancestor or is derived from other lineages such as Archdale COMBE of VA or other early colonial COMBS &c. Stafford County COMBS' ruled out
Test the assumptions that there were five COOMBS brothers and their father in the Tonoloway settlement of PA in 1749/50 and 1755. Validate the relationships by comparing their “genetic profiles” to one another. Started
Note: Fairly well documented back to John Coombs of the Tonoloways settlement in PA. We believe that John Coombs’ father named Joseph lived in the Tonoloways Settlement in PA in 1755. Lack of documents is a roadblock. Migration of some family members points to Loudoun Co. VA as the possible location before PA. Some research is derived from other researchers but the main lineage is well supported and documented. The five brothers assumptions are not well documented, although relationships can be established among some of them. One of the putative brothers namely Samuel has a history that has a number of unanswered questions. Herron, Jolley, Nelson, Wright & McKinney are associated families.

Determine the ancestry of Gen. James H. "Joe" COMBS by comparing genetic profiles.
Note: I'm indebted to my late cousin Hazel Russell for much of this info. I suspect a John Combs from what's now Barren County KY (born 1791) was the father of James H. "Joe" but I can't prove that. I also think "Joe" was disowned because he was a Unionist and therefore previous family records are harder to locate.

Note: Well documented to Gen #7. Malinda Combs' marriage is documented on the Loudoun County, VA page of the website. Two Combs-Herron marriages in Nelson Co, KY (to children of John and Alice JOLLY Combs) may or may not be significant. Malinda moved to Perry Co. OH around 1823-24. There were four Combs men that moved from Loudoun Co. VA to the area around Perry Co. Ohio around 1816-17. Is it possible these were Malinda's family? Isreal Combs and Mahlon Combs are both of an age to be her father. Her second son is named Isreal. There is also a Jane Ellis that moved to this area of Ohio around 1823-24. This is possibly Jane Combs that married Henry Ellis May 1815 in Loudoun Co. VA. Could this be a sister to Malinda?

Goals
Determine the genetic profile for this branch of COMBS.
Establish the “lineage genetic profile” by matching the DNA from this branch of COMBS with potentially other Stafford County, VA COMBS.
Note:Chart derived from internet search. I’m less confident about this line on my grandfather’s side. I need to verify the tree leading from Martha Ann Smith to Millie Combs and Alicia Nancy Combs — and the Combs website is uncertain about their ties to the initial Mason Combs. Gen #7 Cannot verify Millie’s parents; There may be a JOHN COMBS III.

Later I started using Ancestory.com. Interested in establishing the specific COMBS branch for this line.
I would like to resolve --
The 1880 census for Jeremiah Combs states that his father Edward Combs was born in Virginia. Is that true?;
Family stories indicating our line is related to the Combs line from Hazard KY are now disproved.
War of 1812 Pension records state Edward Combs married Sophia Hicks in the Indiana Territory in 1808. Did Edward live in the Indiana Territory?
The book Kentucky Soldiers of the War of 1812 lists Edward on the roll of Captain David Todd's company on August 20, 1813, and I can locate Edward Combs as early as 1814 on Fayette Co KY tax records. Where was Edward before these dates and where does he come from?
