Footnote 1. Page 135. "9 William, m. first, Mary Begley; second Mrs. Mary Herndon Burke" is in error. William COMBS m 1st Litha [a.k.a. Letha, etc.] Ann BEGLEY (Perry Co, KY Vital Statistics and 1912 Lee Co KY DC of son, Henry B. See also 1850 Perry Co KY Census).

Footnote 2. Page 135. Re the statement that 9 Nicholas, s/o Samuel and Nancy CORNETT Combs, m "a BOLEN," the reference is apparently to the marriage of Nicholas and Mary BOWLING Combs (See Page 89, the 1850 Breathitt Co, KY Census, 1853 Owsley Co, KY Vital Stats, Pulaski, Laurel and Jackson Cos, KY, and Cooke Co, TX. Seeking documentation for all children of Samuel & Nancy CORNETT Combs, including Nicholas.

Footnote 3. Pages 135, 136 & 138. On p. 135, it is stated that 9 Mary, d/o 10 Samuel and Nancy CORNETT Combs, m Elijah R. BEGLEY. On p. 136, is listed the family of 9 Mary and E. R. BEGLEY. On pp. 138-9, is the family of 9 Mary and Elijah BEGLEY. These are apparently the same family except that the first entry includes the information that Orlena married a SMITH, and spells Pharis (Farris), and the second entry questions Emmer vs. Elmer, and includes two additional daughters. Immediately following each of these "almost" duplicate entries are "almost" duplicate entries for the family of their son, Judge W. E. BEGLEY.

Footnote 4. Page 136. Re Addie COMBS, d/o James Jesse and Nannie BRANDENBURG Combs, lists daughter, Addie, as having m a PENDLETON, but Page 196, Appendix, list her as having m a BRANDENBURG, the 1942 Owsley Co, KY obituary of her brother, Clayton, lists her as Mrs. Addie BRANDENBURG of Beattyville (Owsley Co, KY), and the 1958 Lee Co, KY obituary of her brother, Matt COMBS,  lists her as Mrs. Addie BRANDENBURG of Los Angeles, CA, in each of the latter instances, the use of her given name perhaps signifying her husband was deceased? Research is progress to see if Addie was also married to a PENDLETON.

Footnote 5. Pages 139 & 140. Re "9 Samuel "Black Sam" [s/o Nicholas ("Bird Eye") and Elizabeth COMBS Combs] m. Elizabeth (Lisa) Combs, dau. of old George." Conflicts: On  p. 70, it is stated that Eliza, d/o George & Lydia, m Zachariah MORGAN (with no mention of Samuel COMBS), but no Eliza is included in the General Table under George Combs. The children listed on page 140 are based on 1850 Perry Co KY (District 1, HH220-228). This record lists three children, not four, and all apparently with surname MORGAN; i.e., Washington, Nicholas and Granville MORGAN. On 04 Oct 1858, one Washington MORGAN m Sally CORNETT, Jesse COMBS, surety. Nor are the children found in the 1860 census as COMBS (No MORGAN search yet). On 15 May 1859, in Perry Co, KY, a Nicholas COMBS was born to a Samuel and Liza MORGAN Combs (Perry Co KY Vital Statistics). Possibly the same couple? See Combs &c. Research Report of George "8" and Lydia HERALD Combs for more re this family and these conflicts.

Footnote 6. Page 140. "10 Ray, m. Melda Ritchie, and had: Polly, Joshua, Jesse, Bessie, Cassie, Marie, Nancy, Melissa, Bailey." The formal given name of Ray COMBS (s/o Alexander & Mary BRASHEAR Combs) was Samuel Ray Brashears COMBS (See 1870 Perry Co, KY Census). He m Armelda RITCHIE (d/o Josh & Nancy HALL Ritchie), b 8/30/1869, d 1/9/1940, Perry Co, KY (Death Cert).

Footnote 7. Page 140. Re the family of Jeremiah C. "Chunky" COMBS (s/o Nicholas "8"): (1) According to Dickey Diary Interview of his son, John S. COMBS, Jeremiah m Syntha SUMNER (d/o Samuel and Winnifred COMBS Sumner (Hicks), gd/o William & Seth STACY Combs, Sr.), not Nancy SUMNER. (2) According to Perry Co, KY records: (a) his daughter, Sitha (Seth, etc.), m Robert H. GODSEY, not Oscar GODSEY; (b) his daughter, Elizabeth, m Robert C. COMBS (s/o Samuel & Nancy CORNETT Combs), not John WALKER, the latter having m his daughter, Polly Ann; (c) his daughter, Dorcas, m Wayne DAVIDSON; (d) no mention of a daughter, Susanna, is found in his 1853 Perry Co, KY will.

Footnote 8. Page 141. Moses COMBS, b ca 1806, KY, m Lythie COMBS, b ca 1806, KY (according to the 1850 Perry Co, KY Census and 1912 Knott Co KY death certificate of their son, Felix, b ca 1826 (1827 per 1850 Perry Co KY Census). The Dickey Diary interview of John S. COMBS (b 1819), states that his parents were Jeremiah and Synthia SUMNER Combs. The Dickey Diary interview of Andrew COMBS (b 1806) states that "I am a brother of John S. COMBS who lives on this creek." Andrew COMBS also states: "My brother, Mose was the eldest child. He was a man grown when I was a boy." If the last statement is true, then Andrew's brother, Moses, was probably at least ten years older than him (b ca 1796?), in which case, the above Moses COMBS cannot be the s/o Jeremiah and Synthia SUMNER Combs; however, Jeremiah COMBS was b abt 1780 and thus would have been only 16 years of age when Moses was born if by 1796. The interviews of John S. and Andrew COMBS took place on the same date and at the same place, and read as though they were interviewed by Rev. Dickey together, in which case, might it have been John S. who made the statement abt Moses being a grown boy?

Re the marriage of Moses' son, Felix, to Millie COMBS, d/o "Jeremiah 9 ("Long Jerry")?", no evidence of this relationship has been located as yet. Felix m (1) 24 Nov 1845, Perry Co, KY, Susanna COMBS, who was possibly (not yet documented) the d/o Jeremiah "Curly" COMBS (ancestry unknown) and Elizabeth "Bettie" COMBS (d/o Henry "8" and Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr.), by whom he had William, Diannah, Felix, Samuel and Moses COMBS; m (2) 16 Oct 1858, Perry Co, KY, Chloe (possibly nee BRANSON?), widow of (1) Ezekiel HALL and (2) Unknown BEGLEY. Felix and Susan are on the 1850 Perry Co, KY Census, and in 1860-1880, Felix and wife, Chloe appear on the Perry Co, KY census (their only known joint issue was daughter, Sarilda, b ca 1859). Any marriage to any Millie COMBS would have had to be after 1880, and none has been located as yet. Nor has a Richard COMBS, s/o Felix, been located as yet.

Footnote 9. Page 141. Re "9 Nicholas [Combs] and Margaret [Combs]". Nicholas S. COMBS, Jr., s/o Jeremiah C. "Chunky" & Syntha SUMNER Combs, Sr., m Margaret COMBS, d/o Jeremiah "Long" COMBS, Sr. as documented by the latter's Research Report and Perry Co, KY Records; however, the author's source for children Hyskiah (probably Hezekiah?) and Polly is not known, nor is it documented by the records (See 1850 Perry Co, KY Census). See numerous other references to various Nicholas & Margaret "Peggy" COMBS in this ms., clearly not all the same, and clearly conflicting, particularly Page 125 of the General Table, which incorrectly lists this same Margaret as the d/o Rev. War Soldier John "8" COMBS.
