Devonshire, an enormous shire in the southwest of England, was east of Cornwall, with the counties of Somerset and Dorset to its east, and included large numbers of Combs Families (including all variant spellings) as early as the 1300s.

Gone Missing

Missing Devonshire Combs #1: Chrian (Christian? Christine?) COMBE married a LANGWORTH of Devonshire pre-1629, and may have been the sister of John and Margaret ARCHDALE Combe, Merchant and Draper of St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, London. Researcher Denise Mortorff reports that Devonshire IGI extracts indicate that Langworths are found in the parishes of: Hache Arundel as early as 1583 [no Combs]; Totnes in 1665 [Combs as early as 1612]; Widecombe In the Mar as early as 1608 (popular area for Langworth) [no Combs]; Bridford as early as 1613 [no Combs until 1698]; Crediton, Crediton Hundred, Southern Division, as early as 1573 [Combs as early as 1568].

Missing Devonshire Combs #2: According to the late researcher Fred Coombes of Madison, WI, USA, one Richard COMBES of Combe Manor, Devonshire, EN, died 7 Apr 1619, leaving issue: Joseph, William, Austin, Richard and John Combs, the latter born 10 Mar 1566/7. Seeking Combe Manor and these records.
