Wiltshire, England is surrounded by the counties of Somerset to the East, Dorset to the South, Hampshire to the Southeast, Berks to the East, Gloucester to the North and Oxford to the northwest. At least some of the Combs of Wiltshire are known to have had close ties to Somerset.

The Combs surname (including all variants) appears in the records of Wilts by 1279 (and apparently much earlier - Domesday entries not yet extracted) with Richard and son, Simon, lords of the manor of Fittleton. See also 1332 Wilshire Tax Lists
