Switzerland County was established in 1814 from Dearborn and Jefferson, and lies directly across the river from the present-day Kentucky Counties of Carroll (est. in 1838 from Henry, Gallatin and Trimble) and Gallatin (est. in 1799 from Franklin and Shelby).
