"DAVID A. MONARCH, one mile south of Knottsville, was born in Marion County, Ky., Dec. 14, 1829, and is a son of James MONARCH (deceased), a native of St. Mary's County, Md., and a descendant of the Lord Baltimore [sic] Catholics, the first settlers of Maryland. He brought his family to this county in 1832, settling in Knottsville Precinct. He was a farmer and cooper by occupation. Our subject was therefore brought up from childhood on the farm, and has always been a farmer. Also for the past six years he has worked at the blacksmith's trade, which he acquired himself without any instructor. On the 16th day of November, 1852, he married Miss Maria J. HANDLEY, a daughter of Ben HANDLEY (deceased). They had seven children, six living--Edwin E., John T., James B., Mary J. (COOMES), Rose A. and William D. Mr. MONARCH and family are Catholics, and Rose A. has joined the Sisters of Charity."
1883 From the History of Daviess County, Kentucky, Inter-State Publishing Co., Chicago, 1883. Reprinted by McDowell Publications, Utica, KY, 1980. p. 611:
"HILLARY F. COOMES, farmer, stock-raiser and also tobacco merchant, Knottsville, was born in this precinct Feb. 20, 1844. He spent his boyhood days on his father's farm, and was educated at St. Mary's College, in Marion County. He engaged in the mercantile business in Knottsville for two years, but for the past three years has been dealing in tobacco. He was married Oct. 9, 1866, to Ellenora McDANIEL,
daughter of Benedict J. McDANIEL. They had six children, five living--Marietta, Elizabeth H., Minnie R., Edwin L. and Fabien. Mr. COOMES is a Catholic Knight and a member of the Total Abstinence Society. Richard R. COOMES, father of the above, was born in Nelson County, Ky., April 1, 1812, and is a son of Richard COOMES (deceased), who came from North Carolina to this State as early as 1797, while the Indians were yet here. He was one of the first settlers of Bardstown. Mr. COOMES was educated at St. Mary's College. In April, 1841, he came to this county, and was the first County Surveyor of Daviess County, elected under the new Constitution, in 1850. He established the entire boundary line of McLean County, having been appointed to that work by the Legislature. "

20 Dec. 1898(Tuesday) The Nelson Record (Nelson Co. Ky. Newspaper extracted by
Carolyn Wimp): Felix Coomes Dead
Was a Native of Nelson County but Left Here Eighty Years Ago.The last issue of the Owensboro Messenger contains the following: Mr. Felix Coomes, one of the oldest inhabitants of Daviess County, died December 10, at his home near Knottsville, where he has lived for the past fifty-three years. Mr. Coomes was the son of William Coomes, a pioneer of Kentucky, and was born in Nelson County in 1808. He removed to this county about eighty years ago, where Owensboro now stands, and lived there until he married Miss Margaret A. Head,
daughter of William Head, nearly seventy years ago. This worthy couple had born to them and reared nine children, seven boys and two girls, viz: Charles W., James E., Eliza J., Ignatius, Felix A., Thomas M., Mary D., Henry R. and Francis F., all
of whom still live to mourn his loss. All followed him in his last of many journeys to old St. Lawrence Church, where they were all baptised and received the faith that still holds them all members of that church. Mr. Coomes was a Catholic and a Democrat,
an affectionate husband, a kind father, an honest, upright and charitable neighbor, winning a circle of friends as wide as he was known. He was confined to his bed only a short time, and passed away gently when the frosts of ninety winters extinguished the fires of life. Of his nine children all are married except one son and two daughters, who remained faithful to him to the end and knew only the one home where they were born. In the old Catholic prayer book, belonging to Mr. Coomes and printed in Philadelphia by James Carey in 1800, this interesting record is carefully inscribed on the fly leaf: "Register of ages-William
Coomes was born March the 13th, 1769. Rachael Coomes was born October 9, 1775. Their children and their ages: Teresa Coomes was born September 7, 1797, Charles Coomes was born January 20, 1799, Elizabeth Coomes born October 1, 1800, William Coomes August 20, 1801, Mary Margaret Coomes, August 19, 1803, Enoch Ignatius Coomes born March 9, 1805, Charity Barbara born January 24, 1807, Felix Coomes born November 21, 1808, Benita Coomes was born October 10, 1810, Charity Coomes was born February 8, 1813, Stephen Coomes was born October 25, 1815. This is the register of the family of Mr. Coomes' parents.

31 July 1904-17 Feb 1905 extracted by Patience Northern from The Last Public Execution in America by Perry T. Ryan CHAPTER 22
PREVIOUS DEATH SENTENCES IN DAVIESS COUNTY
A total of three men have been sentenced to be legally hanged by judgments of the Daviess Circuit Court, but none have been electrocuted.
The first public hanging was conducted on November 1, 1854. Curtis Richardson, who was part Indian, was convicted of murdering William Lanifer on Christmas Day of 1853. A fight began when Lanifer slapped Richardson's hat from his head; Richardson then stabbed Lanifer. This hanging occurred about fifty feet south of what is now the intersection of Ninth and Breckinridge Streets in Owensboro. Richardson reportedly had seen a hanging in nearby Hawesville, Kentucky, and had stated, "I'll die like that someday." When Richardson was transported to the scaffold, he was taken from the county jail in the back of a wagon, where he sat on his own coffin.
On February 17, 1905, Roy Green, a seventeen-year-old black man, was privately hanged for using a plank to beat to death James Coomes, a native of Webster County. Green also thrust a pointed stick through his victim's throat and robbed him of some $28.00. This incident occurred July 31, 1904. Green's arrest was based upon circumstantial evidence, including Green's presence with the victim on the day of murder and blood which was washed from his clothes that night. A manhunt for Green went as far west as Oklahoma. After committing the murder, Green visited a sister in Evansville for a week and then traveled to Louisville, where he was arrested. Green confessed to his crime while he was being transported from Louisville to Owensboro, stating robbery was his motive. His arraignment was conducted on a train at Union Station, where he was immediately transported to Henderson for safekeeping. He was tried on September 1. Ben D. Ringo was the Commonwealth's Attorney, and he was assisted by County Attorney LaVega Clements. Green did not take the stand in his defense. An appeal to the Kentucky Court of Appeals was denied on January 13, 1903. The gallows was erected on the north side of the County Jail, and a wooden fence measuring twenty feet high denied admittance to the general public. In 1905, the law permitted only fifty witnesses to be present at a hanging, but it was reported that several hundred men and women sought a view from the knot holes of the wooden fence which surrounded the gallows. While on the scaffold, Green gave a full confession, stating, "Mind what your mothers tell you and leave whiskey out. Don't do as I have done." He was pronounced dead by Dr. S S. Watkins and Dr. William Little. Although the Court of Appeals rendered an unpublished opinion in this case, it can be found at Green v. Commonwealth, 26 Ky.Law.Rep. 1221, 83 S.W. 638 (1904).
