SE NOTES: A SMITH family tradition recorded by John D Smith in 1965 shows this Nancy, wife of William JENT, as the d/o of Melvina aka Viney SMITH, d/o of William SMITH Sr. and Millie Combs. Smith states Nancy's father was Thomas WATTS and that her mother Melvina had another child named John HAWKINS by one William HAWKINS, the inference being these two children may have been born outside of marriage. After consultation with Smith researcher JB Francis and a careful review of census records, DCs, deed records, and John D Smith's family recollections, it is now believed that the above Nancy JENT is the same as Nancy SMITH whose daughter Lavina SMITH was born (out of wedlock) in 1857 per Letcher Co. KVS birth records, and also the same who had a son Richard "Dick" Combs out of wedlock by Enoch Combs, and probably the same Nancy, age 13, found in the 1850 household of William Smith Sr. and Millie Combs. She may also be the same Nancy Smith, granddaughter of William Smith who gifted land to his grand daughter Nancy SMITH on 14 March 1852 (see deed above). Nancy later sold this land to William SMITH Jr. in 1861. Nancy JENT'S maiden name of SMITH is proven by the 15 Aug. 1944 Knott Co. DC of her daughter Elizabeth JENT Mullins, wife of Jasper "Jake" MULLINS. The DC states Elizabeth's parents were William JENT and Nancy SMITH. This Nancy SMITH Jent actually had 2 children out of wedlock by Enoch Combs. Although Lavina's birth record lists no father, descendants of Lavina SMITH and William BENTLEY state Lavina's father was Enoch Combs and Lavina named her first son Enoch Bentley. Dick Combs' 1927 Knott Co. DC names his parents as Nancy SMITH and Enoch Combs. Apparently Enoch Combs and the JENTS remained close associates. William JENT and Enoch's brother-in-law Jeremiah SMITH gave an affidavit for Enoch Combs' Civil War pension application in support of Enoch's disability. In 1870, Nancy SMITH Jent was living next door to William Smith (hh 32/32), s/o of William Smith and Millie; 2 doors from Thomas Smith (hh 31/31), s/o of William Sr. & Millie; and 3 doors from William Sr. and Millie (hh 30/31). The William Smith Sr. family lived close to each other. Son Jeremiah Smith was also next door (hh 29/29) to his father William Sr. Per JB Francis, Nancy Jent, b 10/26/1935, d 4/23/1899, and her husband William M Jent were originally buried in the Peamoulter Cemetery, also called Big Hill and last owned by the Spencer P Combs heirs before it was removed to the Carr Fork Memorial Cemetery.

MORE NOTES: The 1852 Letcher Co. deed wherein William SMITH gifts land to his grand daughter Nancy Smith lends credibility to John D Smith's statements about William Smith Sr. having a grand daughter whose name was Nancy. Obviously her grandfather William cared for her and wanted to provide for her security with his gift of land. In 1861, Nancy sells this land to William Jr. who would have been her uncle. She is not found in the 1860 census, nor have any candidates for her children in 1860 been located. No marriage record for her and William JENT has been located, but she was still unmarried in 1861 when she sold her land, and her 1870 census record suggests that Elizabeth may have been her first child by William JENT indicating they married in the mid-1860s, a poor record keeping period for Letcher Co. No candidates for Melvina, d/o of William Smith Sr. have been located, and no documentary evidence has been found to identify the mother or father of Nancy, but Nancy (b. 1835) would have been the child of one of the older children. The 1830 census for William and Millie indicates there was an older daughter, age 10-15, and there is certainly room (time wise) for a daughter to have been born after William and Millie were married in 1816. Melvina is a name found in the descendant list of William and Millie Combs SMITH. Nancy SMITH named her first daughter Lavina who was also styled as Melvina. William SMITH Sr.'s daughter Matilda SMITH Cody named a daughter Melvina, and Sr.'s son William Jr. named a daughter Melvine.
