APPENDIX C. ABSTRACTS OF WILLS.

Extract from tbe Act Book at Lichfield :—

“ Apud Stafford xviij° die mensis Maij Anno dni 1557° Commiss fuit admi’strac bonorum Johis Archdale poch Ste Marie Ville Stafford Anne relict etc. exec etc. exec testi Indnt. renuncioe admi’stracie jurat et het Ad exhend’ Inventar’ citra fm sti Michis Arch p’x etc. ”

MATTHEW ARCHDALE citizen and merchant, of London. Dated. 14 Nov. 1599. Proved, 31 Dec. 1599. Left £500 each to Edward More als Archdale, Stredwicke More, Richard Stansfeilde and Mary Stansfeilde. £100 to his niece Sara Archdale. £50 each to his nieces, Mrs. Combes and Mistres Palmer, and his cousin (?) Elizabeth Archdale. £500 to his nephew Richard Archdale. £500 to Edward Browne and his children. £100 to his brother Thomas. £5 to his nephew Richard Ripton, besides discharging him “ all the debt he oweth me. ” £30 to his nephew John Archdale of Whetlie. £40 to his nephew Abraham Archdale. £40 to his niece Frances Archdale, and £10 each to her three sisters, Bridget, Margaret, and Barbara. To Mary, daughter of his nephew Combes. £10 to Thomas Deadle. The testator’s brother Thomas Archdale, of Alder- manbury, London, sole executor.

Note. Throughout this will, the testator refers to his nephews and nieces as his “ cozens. ”

 

THOMAS ARCHDALE, citizen and merchant, of London. Dated, 5 March 1609, with a nuncupative codicil declared about the l4th Nov. 1611. Proved, 3 Dec. 1611. My body to be buried in the parish church of St. Antholin’s, near the body of my first wife. To my three daughters, Margaret Combe, Sara Sare and Barbara Palmer, 500 marks apiece, one hundred each a year until paid. £100 to Archedale Combe, at age of twenty-one. To my grandchild Sarah Sare the younger, at her age of twenty years £50.   To my grandchild Jane Sare, at age of twenty yearss, £50, To my grandchild Thomas Sare, at twenty-one, £50.  To my grandchild Mary Smyth, at her age of twenty-one years, £100, so that she be guided and directed by her father and mother, especially touching her marriage. To the child wherewith my daughter Barbara Palmer is now conceived, if it be a daughter, £l00 at her age of twenty-one ; but if it be a son , I bequeath the said £100 to John Palmer, the son of my said daughter Barbara, to be paid at his age of twenty and one years. To my cousin (nephew) Abraham Archedale, the yearly payment of £20 during the life of the mother of said Abraham ; also £50 more to be paid to him only by £10 a year. To my cousin (niece) Bridget Archedale, £30 within six months next after my decease. To my cousin (nephew) Richard Ripton , 40 shillings a year, until £10 be paid. £6 13sh. 4d. each to my friend James Colbron, and his son Thomas Colbrone. To my cousin (grand-nephew) Thomas Archedale, the son of my cousin (nephew) Richard Archedale, my godson , £10, to be paid at his age of twenty-one years, To the two maids who now serve my daughter Barbara, £5 apiece, to be paid unto them the day of their marriage, if they then shall be servants to my said daughter, and shall marry by and with the liking and consent of the said Barbara and her husband. To the poor of St. Antholin’s, £5. To the poor of the parish of Aldermanbury and the parish of Norton in Kent, to each £5. To Mr. Harlam, pastor of said parish of Alder- manbury, £5. To the poor of St. John’s upon Walbrooke, 40 shillings, and of Whitechapel, £10. My son-in- law Ady Sare, of the Inner Temple, London, Esquire, to be full and sole executor.

SAMUEL ARCHDALE, of Hornchurch, Essex. Dated, 6 June 1617. Proved, 27 Nov. 1617. Mentions his mother, Dame Barbara Ayloffe. Brothers, Martin, Robert and Daniel. Sister, Sarah. Witnesses, Thomas Ayloffe, Thomas Wyat. etc.

 

ABRAHAM ARCHDALE, of Whately in the Co. of Oxford, Esq. Dated, 2 Aug. 1631. with codicil of 17 Sept. 1631. Proved, 14 Oct, 1631. My Cousin-German Richard Archdale, of Dowgate Street, London, merchant. My sisters Margaret Bennett of Oxford widow, Frances Lowe and Barbara Barnes widow. Anne Powell, wife of Richard Powell of Forest Hill, being the only daughter of my sister Mary Moulton. Anne Barnes, daughter of my sister Barbara. The four daughters of my sister Dorothy Stampe, i.e. Margaret Hester, Mary Hall, Elizabeth Stampe and Ursula Stampe. The children of my sister Lowe, viz. Richard Lowe, Mary Pudsey, Elizabeth, Frances and Anne. The two sons of my sister Bridget B1ackbourne, viz. William and Richard. Richard Powell, eldest son of my niece Powell. My cousin Thomas Flexney, of Oxford, and his eldest son Francis. My cousin Mrs, Judith Archdale. Martin and Daniel, some of Martin Archdale my uncle late of London, merchant.   Dorothy Field, granddaughter of my sister Stampe, and Anne Field, her sister. My uncle Mr. Anthony Ferne, of London, gentleman. John Hester, son of Margaret Hester. My cousins Mr. Richard Powell of Forest Hill, and Samuel Gardner of the University of Oxon, gent., to be overseers. Richard Archdale, sole executor.

16 Sept. 1656, administration “ de bonis non,” with the will annexed, was granted to Matthew Archdale, son of Richard Archhdale, sole executor.
