In 1685, the Cape May Court (later Cape May Co) was established from Burlington, and in 1686, the Gloucester Court (later Gloucester Co) was established from Burlington. In 1694, Burlington was officially designated a county of the West Jersey Province, and in 1702, the East and West Jersey Provinces were merged. In 1714, Hunterdon Co was established from Burlington. In 1838, Mercer Co NJ was established from Burlington, Somerset, Middlesex and Hunterdon Cos. In 1891, Ocean Co gained from Burlington, and in 1902 Burlington gained from Atlantic and Camden Cos.

ca 1816 Columbus, Burlington Co, NJ. Born: Harrison COOMBS
(Combs Researcher Kathy Karn from 1869 Burlington Co, NJ death certificate)
KK Notes: Harrison COOMBS, possibly the s/o Abner COMBS, married sometime in the 1830's to Elizabeth FOWLER, but cannot locate a marriage date or sibling/parent info for either one of them. Census records place the family in Burlington Co NJ every time except in 1880 when they lived in Bucks Co, PA. Harrison died Oct. 25, 1869. His wife Eliza died in Oct. 1900 at the age of 90. I have Bible records on their children which include full names and birth dates, I have added some info next to each name that I have verified through death, marriage or census records.
Children of Harrison COOMBS and Eliza FOWLER (early spelling of names was COMBS):
- John Wesly COMBS Nov. 28, 1837, died Nov. 29, 1837
- Issac Gillam COMBS born Feb. 8, 1839, died in Trenton, NJ in 1923. married Mary E. SHINN had 8 children.
- George Harrison COMBS born June 27, 1840, died Nov. 23, 1843
- William Wasey COMBS born Aug. 19,1841, died May 18, 1905 in New Lisbon State Hospital, never married.
- Charles Ellis COMBS born July 6, 1843, may have died abt 1914. He married ca 1872 in Burlington, Grace McCLOSKEY and had 3 daughters and 1 son. The family had 3 girls in PA by 1880, but I only know the name of the youngest, Nellie, and a son Charles in 1881 in Ohio. In 1880 Charles was still with his family in Fayette Co, OH. On June 27, 1882 he said good bye and went to work-never was seen by his family again (Civil War Pension File of Grace McCLOSKY Combs), by 1900 back in PA. In 1914, Nellie wrote a letter to my grandmother, Helen Fowler COOMBS, that her mother was applying for a widow's pension and needed a copy of her marriage certificate and that the son Charles had also deserted the family and she didn't know if he was alive or dead. Nellie never married and her 2 sisters died fairly young though one had 2 little girls.
- Mary Elizabeth COMBS born March 10, 1845, died May 4, 1845
- James Harrison COMBS born Aug. 27, 1846 died in Burlington Co. NJ 1933. My gr grandfather, he married Sarah Frances VanSciver in Burlington, NJ in 1870. They had 2 daughters
- Emma Matilda COMBS born July 27, 1848, died of consumption somewhere between 1880-1885, she never married.

1848 Burlington Co, NJ Death Records. Died: Abner COMBS, b 1780, Monmouth Co, NJ, s/o James COMBS
(Combs Researcher Kathy Karn)
KK Notes: Abner may have had two wives. Of his known children:
- James COMBS was born abt 1823 in Hightstown (Mercer Co from Middlesex in 1838); his 1886 Burlington death cert lists parents as Abner COMBS and Mary; served in the Civil War, married 1865, widow, Elizabeth CLANGSTON, had 2 sons Abner and Nathan.
- Lydia COMBS, born July 1825, possibly a twin, born NJ parents listed on 1886 Burlington NJ death cert as Abner COMBS and Matilda; married Robert THOMPSON in 1844 in Burlington, had 1 daughter Margaret.
- Ezekiel COMBS, born July 1825 in NJ, never married, parents not listed on 1906 Camden Co, NJ death cert, but always lived with Matilda COMBS, Lydia COMBS Thompson or younger sister, Sarah Ann COMBS Purdy.
- Sarah Ann COMBS, born July 20, 1835 in NJ, father listed on 1910 Camden Co, NJ death cert as Abner, married George PURDY, 2 children Lilly and Edward.
- An undocumented 5th (eldest?) child of Abner was Harrison COOMBS, b 1816, d 1869, both in Burlington, who, with Matilda, was in Burlington in 1850, and at one point, Harrison's son, Isaac, lived next door to Matilda, who attended same church as Harrison, and was baptized on same date as Eliza. Matilda not found after the 1870 census, was b ca 1795 so likely deceased. In the 1830 Mansfield Twp census record of Abner COMBS, in additon to above children born pre-1830, there is also listed a female age 10-15 that I have not been able to trace and a male 10-15 who I am trying to prove/disprove is my gr gr grandfather Harrison COOMBS.
