Russell County was organized from Washington Co VA in 1786; Lee Co was established from SW Russell in 1792-3; Tazewell from Russell and Wythe in 1799; and Scott from Russell, Lee and Washington in 1814-5. In 1855, Wise was formed and in 1858, Buchanan (In 1880, Dickenson was formed from Wise and Buchanan). Kentucky lay to the East and Tennessee to the South. Important! Due to VA/TN state line boundary conflicts, Sullivan Co, TN records should also be checked.

Benjamin RAY enlisted in 1775 at Wilmington [New Hanover Co?] in the Spring of 1775 in the Company of Capt. John Baptist ASH, 6th Regt. NC, commanded by Col. Thomas CLARKE, and that he was at the Battles of Brandywine and Monmouth, and the Battle of Germantown (at which Gen. [sic] ASH was killed); that he was afterward taken prisoner at the siege of Charlestown, South Carolina, and held 14 months; that he continued in RW service through the end of the War (ca 1783?) whereupon he was discharged in Stafford Co, VA. (Extracted from the Rev. War Pension Affidavit of Benjamin RAY) According to the affidavit of his widow, Nancy, he afterward moved to Surry Co, NC, thence in 1798 from Surry Co., NC, to Russell Co., VA where pensioned; age 62 in 1818….. mentions wife Nancy SUTHERLAND, a.k.a. Annie Combs, Plt vs Wm. F. Combs Deft.
On a warrant of Bastardy.

George MUSICK having returned an examination of Annie Combs of this county single white woman taken before him in writing upon oath upon which examination the said Annie Combs charged William F. Combs with being the father of her Bastard Child, and the said Justice also returned a warrant issued by him for the the[sic] apprehension of the said William F. Combs together with the recognizance entered into by the said Wm. F. Combs when brought before him to appear here and to abide and perform such order as this court should make concerning the same whereupon the said Wm. F. Combs appeared accordingly and the said Annie Combs this day came into court and being sworn and examined and fully heard this court upon the whole circumstances of the case doth adjudge the said Wm. F. Combs to be the father of the said Bastard Child. Therefore it is ordered that the said Wm. F. Combs be charged with annual payment of fifteen dollars to the overseers of the poor of said County for the space of Six years and five months yet to come in case the said Child shall live so long and to pay the costs in this behalf expended and that the said Wm. F. Combs pay the same accordingly at the end of every year untill[sic] the expiration of the said Six years and five months and thereupon the said Wm. F. Combs with Thompson to be his security come into court and acknowledged their bond jointly and severally in the sum of two hundred and ten dollars conditioned for the faithful performance of this order of Court. And on the trial of this cause the overseers of the poor at the instance of Anna [sic] Combs by their counsel excepted to an opinion of the court given upon the said trial and tendered their Bill of exception which was received signed and and[sic] sealed by the Court and ordered to be made part of the record in said cause which Bill of exception is in the following words to wit; The overseers of the poor at the instance of Annie Combs against Wm. F. Combs on a warrant of Bastardy upon the trial of this cause Annie Combs the Bastard Child proved that Wm. F. Combs was the father of her Bastard Child that said Child was seven months old and was a male child and that she was a single white woman and has lived in this county. No other evidince[sic] not offered upon that point. It was further proved on the part of the plaintiff By Dale CARTER and Thomas D. KERNAN that it was worth not less than one dollars per week to support a child of that age untill[sic]it becomes able to support itself, and by Archer Jessee another witness that it was worth not less than seventy five cents per week to furnish such support. And upon the part of the Defendant two witnesses James O. FRALEY and L. D. VAUGHN were introduced who proved that it was worth more than seventy five cents per week to support such a child and the foregoing being all the facts proved in the cause the court upon hearing the testimony decided that the Defendant should pay to the overseers of the poor for the support of the Bastard child aforesaid the sum of fifteen dollars per year for six years and five months from which said opinion and decision of the court the plaintiff by her counsel excepts and prays that this her bill of exception be signed sealed and made part of the record which is accordingly done.

Russell Co. Virginia Law Order Book 15, Page 179. This day William Combs in his own proper person and moved the court for leave to exercise the rights of expatriation persuant to the law of the commonwealth of Virginia which is granted unto him and thereupon the said Combs by open verbal declaration made in open Court did declare that he relinquishes the character of a citizen of the commonwealth of Virginia and that he intended to depart out of the same immediately, it is therefore ordered that the said declaration be spread on the records of our said court and that the said Combs be hereforth deemed and held to be no citizen of the state of Virginia.

Notes: This appears to be William F. Combs, s/o John Million and Sarah HAGINS-HIGGINS Combs. Annie not yet identified.
