Notes: This is Elijah COMBS, son of Jeremiah L. "Long Jerry" and Sallie WHITELY Combs of Perry Co., KY, abt whom The Combes Genealogy states that he married "Katie NOBLE." On the 1880 Breathitt Co., Ky Census Alexander is listed as a NOBLE and a stepson. Who was John's mother? See the following submitted by Jerri Conrad from G. W. Noble's Behold He Cometh In the Clouds: It was not or is not for me to leave Katy Noble out of this book; although she was already been mentioned, but something good will be drawn out of it. You will see that she is one of the Ten Virgins in this book, although she was a spinster and married Elijah Combs, a widower. I was the man who waited on Lige Combs, and Juda Fugate waited on Katy Noble. Juda Fugate was one of my old sweethearts whom I had courted in the time of the war. She was a handsome old maid, and I still loved her, as I did all the girls. I thought Katy Noble was the prettiest girl I ever saw in her young days, because Arrena Noble was small at that time, and I had no thought of her. Katy Noble's father, Lesson Noble, was a rich man in lands; cattle, horses and slaves, and Katy would go out to the field and work. She could ride a horse astride and run him as fast as he could go and stick on him as good as a man astride. She would run horse races with her sweethearts, and she was always with one. She did not go with one certain man; she would just go with the one who first asked for her company. She was a proud girl on Sunday, but when Monday came she was catchy as ever. Lige Combs was an easy kind of man and always into some big job, but never finished anything. He would lack one working in laying by his corn. Lige Combs had a son, John L. Combs; Katy Noble had a son, Alexander Noble. They were small boys at the time Lige and Katy were married. They grew up to be men. Alexander was elected Constable and was an honest, straightforward man in business or anything he undertook. He married Miss Nancy Fugate a nice little girl. Neither she nor Alexander had seen their fathers, and they both could cure the thrash by blowing nine times into a child's mouth.

Notes: Squire and Rachel COMBS Ritchie wer married by 6 Dec 1858 (Perry Co., KY Records) Squire was the son of Gabriel & Nancy CAMPBELL Ritchie (1850 Perry Co., Ky Census). Rachel's ancestry has not yet been determined; however, the 1850 Perry Co., KY Census includes only two Rachel COMBS: (1) Rachel COMBS, born ca 1846, daughter of Francis & Elizabeth OLIVER Combs; (2) Rachel COMBS, born ca 1839, daughter of George & Nancy SMITH Combs. In the 1880 Breathitt Co, KY Census, Squire and Rachel COMBS Ritchie are only a few households away from Franklin COMBS, son of Francis and Elizabeth OLIVER Combs. Daughter Sarah married William B. SE Note: Could the above be Jane Combs, d/o of Jeremiah "Long Jerry" Combs, who first married Leviticus FULLER, and then, according to The Combes Genealogy, married Wilbur Patton. Jane and Leviticus had two daughters, Betty FULLER b 25 Jan 1855, Perry KY VS, and Sally FULLER 3, b 7 May 1857, Perry KY VS. Besides the 2 daughters (Sarah and Elizabeth), Leviticus and Jane also had a son (name unreadable) per the 1860 Perry Co., Ky. census who was age 9 months and could be the Jefferson above. If they are the same, it would appear she remarried shortly after her husband died during the Civil War. Researcher Annette Potter states "Leviticus was at home during the Federal Occupation when he was dragged from his home and taken to Rock Island Illinois POW Prison where he died or was killed." Jane and Leviticus FULLER previously found in the 1860 Perry Co., Ky. census.

In 1880, Sira, and one of these women (Polly CAUDILL based on her age), are on the 1880 Lee Co., KY Census; however, see also 1880 Breathitt KY with Polly ROBERTS (wife of Sira?) with nephew Elihu ROBERTS, age 11 (the above?), and niece Minerva COMBS, age 18. Delilah appears to have died between 1870 and 1877, by which time Joseph is married to Elizabeth FARMER Johnson. Their daughter, the above Minerva, may have been the same who was age 19, listed as a niece in the 1880 Breathitt Co, KY Census HH of a Polly ROBERTS who may have been wife of Sira COMBS (son of Preston and Nancy).

Preston died in 1877 and 2nd wife Sarah appears on the 1880 Breathitt Co., Ky Census as a widow. Who was Sarah married to be fore Preston? The children Peter, Simon and Curtis are not COMBS because Preston was still married to Nancy STACY in 1860. Are Mary, Henry and Jefferson COMBS sons of Preston, or from Sarah's previous marriage?

Notes: According to [Granville] Pearl COMBS' 11-14 May 1933 Breathitt Co. Death Certificate, he was the son of Mason COMBS and Vienna ANGEL, both born Owsley Co., KY. Was Mason a.k.a. Moses, the son of Preston and Nancy STACY Combs (age 10 in their 1850 Breathitt Co, KY HH)? No Mason or Moses has been found in 1860 of the right age, and he is dead by 1880 when his widow appears on the 1880 Breathitt Co., Ky Census. Vina/Vienna appears to have been Viney, daughter of Ephraim and Susan INGRAM Angell of Owsley Co, KY, listed in their 1850 Census HH as age 12, on the Census page in between (1) William and Elizabeth STAPLETON Combs (son of Benjamin & Jane BROWN Combs) and Levi and Rachal COMBS Pennington (daughter of Samuel and Nancy CORNETT Combs), and (2) Claiborne and Sally COMBS (Hundley) Combs.
