Combs &c. Families of Botetourt Co, VA

Botetourt County, VA was established in 1769-70 from Old Augusta. In 1772, Fincastle was established from Botetourt, and in 1776-7, Montgomery, Washington and the now-state of Kentucky were created from Old Fincastle (records held by Montgomery). In 1789-90, Wythe was created from Montgomery, and in 1792-3, Grayson was created from Wythe. In 1799-1800, Tazewell was created from Russell and Wythe, and in 1806 Grayson gained from Patrick (that part now-in Carroll Co).

1770 Botetourt Co VA. Delinquent Tax List. Francis Combs. (Bundle, not by district. Extracted by the late Merry Stacy, provided by Combs-Stacy Researcher Barbara Stacy Mathews; can also be found in the "Virginia Genealogist" Vol 10, page 55)

Note: The above Francis Combs has not been identified - not surprising given that Botetourt Co in 1770 comprised most of Western Virginia, Kentucky, now-West Virginia; in fact, to the Pacific Ocean. Question: Could he have been Francis & Charity WOOD Combs of Surry NC who removed to that county between 1768 and 1771?

1812-13 Gilbert & Christianna DENTON Combs came to Botetourt from Culpeper Co VA (earlier in Monmouth Co, NJ, then Shenandoah Co, VA).
