Carroll County was established in 1842 from Grayson Co VA (Wythe < Montgomery). Note, however, that (1) in 1806, Grayson also gained land from Patrick Co VA (Henry < Pittsylvania < Halifax < Lunenburg); and (2) that this county is on the long-disputed North Carolina-Virginia state line; thus records of the same families can also be found in North Carolina.
Also Note that Deed Mapping is already in progress for
Combs &c. Land in this county.

3/1/1855 Carroll Co, VA Married: Zadock(?) Combs and Millie JOHNSON (Source?)
Marriage Certificates, Carroll County, Virginia
Zeddick Combs and Milley Johnson; 01 Mar 1855 at Carroll County, Virginia. Z. Combs: born Carroll Co., Va.; farmer (40) son of Wm. and Jane Combs; widower M. Johnson: born Carroll Co, Va.; (39) dau of Wm. and Mary Johnson; single Both live in Carroll Co., Va. Married by Hugh Jones Page 40, Line 3 (State Dept. of Health Cert.) Book 1 Page 2 Line 3 (County Clerk Register)
Stephen J. Smith Note: On the Certified Copy (issued September 11, 1978) of the document above, Milly's age at DOM was listed as 29 the info above (39) is from the original Index in Carroll County. Milly Combs is listed with Zeddac Combs in "Census, 1860, Carroll Co., VA, Family # 635, Zeddac and Milly Combs" where she is listed as age 45 as well as "Census, 1850, Carroll Co., VA, Family # 402, Johnson, William & Polley, Page 58: Milley, Age 33 f." Her marriage in 1855 would thus place her age as 38-40, matching the Original Index age of 39 (not 29, a typo, in the CC, which I didn't bother to have corrected at the time, since she was not my direct ancestor and I was trying to document Zed's parents with that certificate)

(Carroll Co, VA GenWeb, Aug. 1858 Deaths, includes notation that <shgorilley@mailexcite.com> added info that Riley Jackson's parents were: Zedekiah (Zeddoc) & Susannah [PAYNE] Combs; and Joseph Washington's parents were: Zedekiah (Zeddoc) & Matilda (Milly) [JOHNSON] Combs)
Notes: Riley Combs, then age 8 (b ca 1842), on 1850 Surry Co, NC census in HH of Zadock and Susannah PAYNE Combs. Source for second wife? For given name Matilda? For ancestry of Joseph Washington Combs?
Additional Notes provided by Stephen J. Smith
Source for second wife. GGGrandson of Zadok Combs. Note the many variations of the spelling of both Zad/Zed's and Mill(e)y's name in all the following. I am Zed's great-great-grandson from his 3rd marriage (which you do not have yet). Zed married first Susannah Payne in Grayson (later Carroll) County, VA in 13 Apr 1833, lived in Surry Co., NC in 1850, then in Carroll County, VA from circa 1855 (marriage to wife 2, Milley on 01 Mar 1855) to 1868 (based on land records), then is listed in the Wilkes Co., NC Census in 1870 through the 1880 Census. He died between 1884 (Wilkes County Deed) and 1900 (when my great-great-grandmother was listed as widowed in the W.Va. Census).
For given name Matilda?: I can't support or deny that name. All records I have found list her name as Milly, Milley, Millia, Emillah (in same deed as Millia), Millie (in same deed as Millia), the last two deeds being different ones (where her name was spelled 2 ways in each of the two documents, in the Grantor and Signature areas). These names include her marriage certificate, census listing in father's household, census listing in husband's household, and 3 deeds from the 1850's in Carroll County. I don't know if Milley is a nickname for Matilda or not....or whether it should be Emiliah or Emily or some other variation instead of Matilda...but I am more familiar with Matilda being nicked Tilley or Tilda, not Milley, but I just don't know for sure. She signed her name with her mark, so none of the sources is "primary" in showing how SHE spelled it. Note Death Certificates for Riley and Joseph Washington Combs that Zed himself must have called her Matilda, since he was the source for the two certificates and they both list "Matilda" as the mother's name (unless the County Clerk went off on his own little tangent and expanded her name).
Riley Jackson Combs; died August 1858 at Carroll Co., Va. born: Carroll Co., Va.; age 18 at death. son of Zeddoc and Matilda Combs cause of death: scarlet fever informant: Zeddoc Combs, father. Book 1, Page 5, line 6. Joseph Washington Combs; died August 1858 at Carroll Co., Va. born: Carroll Co., Va.; age 1 yr., 1 mo. at death. son of Zeddoc and Matilda Combs cause of death: scarlet fever informant: Zeddoc Combs, father. Book 1, Page 5, line 7.
For ancestry of Joseph Washington Combs?: Death Certificates for Joseph Washington and Riley Jackson Combs (above). Riley's record is listing his step-mother at the time, since he appears in the 1850 Surry Census as a child of Zedick and Susannah Combs as you noted in your comments on the page. There is no doubt that the two Zeddac/Zedick's were the same, since two of the children are common to both census records in 1850 and 1860 (Rosey age 5, Alexander age 2 in 1850; Lerosy J. age 15 and Alexander M age 11 in 1860). Note also that each Death Certificate lists the parents.

See Also below for more re James T. COOMES Family
A Mystery COOMES in Carroll Co, VA - a relative late-comer - was James T.(Tucker) COOMES about whom there is a long-standing oral family history passed down through several lines (with minor variations) as follows:
“James T. COOMES was born in Baltimore, Md. 1816-17 of English parents. His father was captain of a ship flying the Union Jack. Our cousin tells of her grandfather, William Henry COOMES being named for his grandfather. That gives us a name - William COOMES. However, she also tells us that there was a mariner in 1774 who brought people to Va. NC. area from Scotland and Ireland named William BUDDICombs on the Ship Molly. There is the possibility that he dropped the first part of his name and used the name Combs.”
Note: Much more on this COOMES [sic] family still to be added! (Report coming shortly)
